Types of Loft Insulation
Loft insulation rolls
Rolls of loft insulation are the most common and found in most DIY stores and are generally mineral wool or quilted material. These rolls of insulation are rolled out in between joists, with the next layer being placed on the first at right angles. However, always check the instructions on each individual loft insulation product before you start.
If you are going to DIY loft insulation be sure to look out for recycled loft insulation in your local DIY store which will save even further CO2 due to the recycling of old materials.
Blown loft insulation
This is ideal for harder to reach or access loft spaces. The loft insulation is blown into the area which is being insulated to the depth required in loose particles.
Rafter insulation / loft insulation boards
Loft Insulation boards can also be installed in the rafters of the roof space. The rafter insulation is often called by some common trade names, Kingspan and Celotex. This can often be more expensive than mineral rolls but may prove more suitable and provide extra benefits to traditional ‘loft insulation’ in a number of scenarios.
- Ideal for loft conversions
- Good for vaulted ceilings where there is not a ‘loft space’
- Provides a warm roof space and therefore no need to insulate water pipes and tanks
There are often special one time offers which are available in addition to grants for energy saving. These energy saving offers are often CERT funded and distributed in various ways. Be sure to check out our blog for current energy saving offers.
